Natator depressus (flatback turtle)

ecology

Natator depressus turtles are endemic in tropical waters around Australia. About 5000-10,000 female turtles nest every year along Australia's beaches, but the population trend remains unknown.

Wild pigs, foxes and monitor lizards (goannas) raid nests and cause enormous damage at nesting beaches. Fishery around Australia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea is a major problem: every year many hatchlings and adults are killed in nets.
